Regular emails from your friend Bunny Manders about the adventures of his gentleman cricketer companion.
Inspired by Jabbage’s marvelous Letters From Watson project, (which was initially inspired by the celebrated Dracula Daily project by Matt Kirkland,) Letters from Bunny will let you read through the 26 short stories and novel of the the Raffles canon written by E. W. Hornung from mid-March to the end of December.
The content will be sent out in the following order:
The Amateur Cracksman (8 short stories)
The Black Mask (8 short stories)
Mr. Justice Raffles (novel)
A Thief in the Night (10 short stories)
I will begin sending out stories on March 15th, 2024. I have chosen this date to align with the first story in the Raffles canon, The Ides of March.
Calendar of Letter Dates - A weekly calendar for 2024 with the dates of each letter.
Frequently Asked Questions
How did you decide the chronology?
For the most part, I am sticking to the order the works were originally published in, however I have swapped Mr. Justice Raffles and A Thief in the Night. Without spoiling anything, I think that the ending of the latter is better suited to the ending of the project than the ending of the novel would be.
Are you including the stage play?
No, I will not be including the stage play Raffles, the Amateur Cracksman in the course of the Letters from Bunny project. If it is desired at the end of the year, I may consider posting it at the beginning of 2025, but as yet I do not think it would fit among the rest of the stories, since it is in such a different format.
Will you be including content warnings?
Yes! There is much we can enjoy and learn from reading literature from a different time in history, but it is crucial to do so with recognition of the prejudices and practices of the era. There is content in these stories which it might be easier for some readers to engage with if there is a warning of what they might expect. I have a document here which is in-progress, and my hope is to have crowd-sourced content warnings so that readers can make informed decisions. Anyone is welcome to view and edit the document.
How often will I get emails? How long will the emails be?
Emails will be sent out every three days, which amounts to 2-3 emails a week. Additionally, there will be 3-week hiatuses in between each of the books.
Each email will be under 5000 words, most between 2-4k. They are designed to be read in about 10-20 minutes.
Is there a place I can chat with others on the mailing list?
Yes! Join the community discord for discussions about historical context, literary analysis, memes and more! Additionally, the #lettersfrombunny tag on tumblr will be active!
What if I join late?
The more the merrier! You can catch up in the archive, and because the stories are episodic you can join any time throughout the year without being too lost.
What happens if I reply to one of Mr. Manders’ emails?
You will likely not get a reply, but his secretary will be much obliged to read it and pass it along.
